ch3&4

In these two chapters, we come upon 2 new important characters which are Elrond and the Great Goblin. Elrond is met in chapter 3 when the group reaches the city of Rivendell. He is the chief of the elves who is said to have a very kind, strong, and wise personality. The Great Goblin is met in chapter 4 after the goblins tie them up. Unlike Elrond, the Great Goblin seems much more of a bossy and arrogant character. By reading these two chapters, the reader can assume that this book will end up being filled with many adventures with possibly new characters being mentioned every chapter.

In chapter 3, the group visits a city of elves. When they arrive there they are greeted by a group of elves that welcome them and meet the chief elf, Elrond, helps them by translating odd markings that are printed on their weapons and on Thornton’s map of the mountains they are headed to. Thanks to Elrond, they are well prepared for their journey to the mountains.

In chapter 4, the group reaches the mountains and can easily find a good path because of Elrond's help. Otherwise, it is easy to get lost with many dead ends on the trail. Although the group has an ideal sense of direction of where they are going, a thunder storm comes in and ruins it all. Fortunately, they find a cave to stay in for shelter and decide to bring in the ponies and stay there until the next day. While everyone is sleeping, goblins appear out of a crack in the cave, smuggle the ponies, tie everyone up, and take them to the Great Goblin. When they arrive, the Great Goblin is hungry and lunges towards Thornton to eat him. When he does, the sparks of the fire hit the Great Goblin, the room gets dark and a sword strikes at him. After this, the dwarfs are chased by the goblins and Bilbo falls and loses conscience.

  1. In my opinion, I think the Great Goblin is too selfish and rather than eating people he should be more nice and be a vegetarian. I think that Elrond is very nice and pleased to help people when they're in need. Elves and goblins are like opposites because goblins like to steal things and are careless about others but elves like to help people and have a passion about helping people.
